Hollywood icon Tom Cruise has declined the prestigious Kennedy Center Honor offered by President Donald Trump.
The Mission: Impossible star was among this year’s selected
honorees but informed organizers he would not be attending, citing “scheduling
conflicts,” according to The Washington Post.
Cruise, who has received multiple Oscar nominations
throughout his career, was set to be part of the first group of honorees under
President Trump’s second term. However, sources from the Kennedy Center
confirmed that the actor personally communicated his decision to the president,
making it clear he could not accept the invitation.
Earlier in the year, the 79-year-old US president ramped up
his involvement in the Kennedy Center selection process. This year’s honorees
list included names personally chosen by Trump—among them Sylvester Stallone,
legendary rock band Kiss, singer Gloria Gaynor, stage star Michael Crawford,
and country music legend George Strait.
If Cruise had accepted, he would have been the headline name
for the 2025 ceremony. The Top Gun actor’s decision marks a notable absence
from what is considered one of America’s most prestigious cultural honors.
Speaking about the honoree selection process, President
Trump revealed his strong personal role in choosing recipients.
“I would say I was about 98 percent involved,” he told
reporters. “They all went through me. I had a couple of wokesters. Now, we have
great people. This is very different than it used to be, very different.”
The 2025 Kennedy Center Honors are scheduled for December
27, 2025, at the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. The event will
be broadcast later on CBS and stream exclusively on Paramount+, bringing the
celebration of artistic achievement to audiences nationwide.
Tom Cruise’s withdrawal adds an unexpected twist to this
year’s ceremony, which has already attracted significant attention due to the
president’s hands-on approach. Whether the absence of one of Hollywood’s
biggest stars will affect the event’s overall appeal remains to be seen, but
the Kennedy Center Honors continue to be a hallmark of American culture.
